Southeastern New Mexico is full of wide open plains and massive underground caverns. Ranching is one of the largest businesses here, and it is home to the Ruidoso horse races. It is also where Billy the Kid roamed, and where Smokey the Bear founded his legend.
Two historic sites in Southeastern New Mexico are the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site and the Chaves County History Museum.
Three Rivers Petroglyphs is just north of Ruidoso, and lodging can be found at the Ruidoso Hotel in downtown Ruidoso.
The Chaves County History Museum in Roswell is a must see for New Mexico History buffs. The Roswell Days Inn provides decent hospitality.
